BOOK #2

Thank you to all who have followed so far! I hope you have also found a good book to read!
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. I picked this book mostly because I remember reading it years ago in elementary school. It is a Newberry medal book and is actually based on true facts. I had no idea about this until I read the Author's notes at the end.
Overall, I commend this young girl for not giving up. I would not have been able to survive for 18 years completely alone. She loses her father, then her family is taken to another land, she jumps ship to go rescue her brother, he dies, and then she is on her own.
Karana builds canoes, makes weapons, hunts and stores food and battles with a walrus. The Indian tribe has different names for these animals, but through descriptions, I found that she ate a ton of oysters, and small fish. She tries to spear a squid, which she calls the devilfish, but to no avail. Her dog Rontu dies, she then tames another dog Rontu-Aru, which she believes is Rontus son.
She loses hope, gains hope, and lives by herself on the Island of the Blue Dolphins for many moons and seasons. An easy read, a good book for your children... rating: like it!
